Looking for a new funeral expense benefit? If you’ve never had a new funeral expense benefit, or your not even quite sure what a funeral insurance policy is or how they work and you just have some questions, we can help. On the other hand, if you already have a funeral expense benefit plan, and you’re looking for a new funeral expense plan, perhaps with lower costs or increased coverage, we can advise you what your options would be with that as well.
Hey, we understand the need to look into lowering your monthly costs in today's economy, heck we all try to do that, but first you must understand that there could be some good reasons why you shouldn’t try to purchase another new funeral expense benefit plan to replace one you may have already purchased in the past. There could be some downside financial risks involved with cancelling a funeral expense benefit plan just to purchase a new funeral expense benefit plan. If you are looking to increase your amount of death benefit that you presently have, that’s another issue all together. Just make sure you are buying another policy, and keeping your old policy in force as well. Don’t cancel one policy to buy another policy, unless you understand that you could be losing money.
We want you to understand that buying a new funeral expense benefit plan to replace an existing one, may not always be in your best interest. Especially if you have had you old funeral expense plan for a number of years, it may not make sense to purchase a new funeral expense benefit plan.
Unfortunately, there are final expense agents out there who will say almost anything, and do almost anything to sell you a new funeral expense benefit plan. They need to make a sale, and may not always do what is in your best interest. However, when you are done here, you will know the exact questions you should ask of your licensed final expense agent before cancelling one funeral expense benefit plan for another.
You must first understand exactly what type of funeral expense benefit plan you currently have. Is your current final expense plan a Whole Life Insurance Plan, or a Term Life Insurance Plan? How much is the death benefit?
There are more moving parts to a whole life plan, than with a term life plan. A whole life insurance plan will build cash value that you may or may not need to borrow against in hard times, and is designed for protection for your whole life. A term life insurance plan is just that, only good for a certain time frame, say 20 years from the date of issue, and then it simply expires with no cash value.
Once you understand which type of policy you have, and you know if you want to add to your current amount of funeral expense benefit coverage, or change coverage because you can’t afford the policy you have, here are some of the most important things you must keep in mind.
Has my health changed since I purchased my old policy? Recent health issues will affect the cost of a new funeral expense benefit policy. On the other hand, if it has been 5 years or more from a significant health issue like cancer, or open heart surgery, it’s possible your new costs could be lower, by switching.
Does my old plan have any cash value? Assuming you have a whole life insurance product, you may be able to use the proceeds of one policy to purchase another.
Make sure just because you are getting a lower price for your new funeral expense benefit, that you are also getting the same amount of coverage, or least you understand the cost is lower because you have opted for a lower death benefit.
Also make sure you know the difference between a guaranteed issue, a simplified issue, and a medically underwritten plan before you consider any changes. You could be switching from a medically underwritten funeral plan to a guaranteed issue funeral plan, and that wouldn’t make much sense.
